| Thanksgiving Day, being an American tradition, has no "native" term in Irish. However, both lá buíochais and lá altaithe mean a "day of thanksgiving". However, while buíochas means thanks, gratitude ... altú means thanksgiving (to God) and is probably more appropriate to the true meaning of Thanksgiving Day. The verb altaigh means "give thanks (to God)"; the verbal noun, thanksgiving, is altú, of which the genitive is altaithe. Altaigh also has the meaning of saying grace at meals. ...
