Matha Pluincéad - Lord Louth
Plunkett Family Crest
The subject of this song, was Matthew Plunkett, 9th Baron Louth. His grandfather the 7th baron was also named Matthew, but he is too early for Carolan's time. He was outlawed for adherence to King James II and died in 1689. His sucessor the 8th baron , was named Oliver. Like Lord Dillon he refused to conform and so was not allowed to take his seat in the House of Lords.
Carolan's patron followed his father's example and remained a Catholic. ... O'Sullivan v 2 p 48.
