The founder of the Dillon family in the Irish peerage was Theobald Dillan, who, on the 25th May, 1582 was appointed by Queen Elizabeth to be Chief Sergeant and General Collector and Receiver for the Provinces of Connaught and Thormond, which office continued under James I.
The subject of this air is Richard, 9th Viscount. He was born in 1688 and succeeded to the title on the death of his father. On January 16, 1715 'in obedience to an order of the House of Lords, he appeared and took the oath of allegance' [ abjuring the spiritual authority of the Pope and the doctrine of transubstantiation.]
